The Dragonflies of Ohio
A friend of mine from England, Warren of Pittswood Birds asked me how many dragonflies we have in Ohio. With some help from Tom at Ohio Nature who gave me a list of 159 Dragonflies. Here are a few I have captured lately and where I found them. They are all beautiful and distinctive.

This is one from home near my garden.
I found this one at a pond on a golf course.
This is from the same pond on the same day.
This is from a little pond on the way to work.
This was at the back of our property.
This is a damselfly but I threw it in.
This is my latest capture from the Kent Bog. I will doing a post on the Bog this week.

    GREAT photos! I LOVE photographing and viewing the different dragonflies, and if I see one that is new to me, I get REALLY excited ;-)

    These are spectacular shots. I think, if I'm not mistaken, the one with the yellow stripe is a female to the male one with blue on it's wings. They are called Blue Dashers, I believe... but, I may be confusing them again.

    Love these dragonflies ... they chomp down all the mosquitoes that they can find. This year we are seeing lots of them and I am glad because there seem to be millions of those little blood thirsty mosquitoes here! Great shots!

    Dragonflies are so lovely! I was terrified of them as a kid and could not be convinced that they weren't in cahoots with green horseflies. I always pictured them biting out hunks of my skin like those nasty horseflies.

    Of course, now I love them.

    Great shots! I have to worst luck photographing dragonflies. I need me a new camera with better zoom, so I can sneak up on them without them knowing it.

    A beautiful series.

    My grandmother used to call dragonflies,"snake feeders or snake doctors" and she said that if you were bitten by one you would die.
    They supposedly fed injured or ill snakes.

    I guess that was another folk tale, as I never heard of one biting anyone.

    I have shots very similar to #2 and #3. I love taking pictures of dragons! 159 varieties...my, my...no wonder I can't name them :-)

    I just love dragon flys but couldn't tell you their names to save my life. I do know we have some pretty blue ones. :-) Great photo FG, you must have had to work for these ones.

    Nice variety of odonata. One hundred and fifty-nine species? That's a good number of different critters. There's like 88 total both damselflies and dragonflies in Oregon, and only about 50 or so in the county I live in (Deschutes).
