Camera Critters #23

Camera Critters by Misty Dawn, go here to see who's participating.

My daughter called me over her house because she wanted me to see a monster spider. It was night and with a spotlight I was able to get this. I think it is a Cross Orb Weaver female. It is wrapping up a tasty moth. It wasn't as big as I thought but it did have a big body. Her home is under a shingle on my daughters front porch.
This is a spider along side my flower garden. There are a lot more spiders building webs and getting ready for winter. I think this is a Funnel Web Spider.

I was taking my grandson Soccer Boy to the library to get a book. I saw something in the tree across the street. Can you see it? I got my camera and went for a better look.
Yes, it was a nest of black paper hornets and the nest was well on it's way.
The light post had something funny going on. A group of Yellow Jackets were having a pow-wow.
they then singled filed into their home. What a funny sight to see.

  1. Save the wasps. They eat bag worms. Brave camera work on spiders and yellow jackets. Have a great weekend. Pappy

  8. Everywhere you look the critters are hard at work, wrapping up the season. Did your grandson find a good book on insects at the library? I need to find one. I had a field guide that went into a yard sale pile by mistake last year.

  10. Insectivora Avenue I think.
On that day I had B&W film only. Other times I used colour transparency. It was some years before I had two Canon bodies or pocketable half-frame cameras.

  15. Very good post! You must know a lot about insects. Spiders are useful but I put them always outside. There are many kinds of spiders. Here in Holland they are not dangerous, but in Australia there are some pretty nasty spiders which bites are poisonous.
