What Is This and Misc.

What is this thing, I have them flying around the yard. They look like a monster mosquito. They have a funny eyes and mouth.
They move fast but hide when they land.
I took Soccer Boy out to see the Painted Lady, this is his photo of two.
I did the close-up work on one of them.
I had a Black winged butterfly with red spots, but it didn't let me get a shot. These are just fun shots.

  1. If that's a mosquito, if he bites, half your blood supply will be gone!

What's the plant the butterfly is on?

  2. Great shots. The mosquito was a good model, maybe it's a mosquito hawk. Your skywatch shots were great too!

  3. Looks like it could be a Giant Crane Fly. Or something related to it. Here is the link to the info I found - http://www.enature.com/fieldguides/view_default.asp?curGroupID=4&shape=1017&Submit=Search

  5. Let's hope that is not a mosquito! Isn't it great to share your love of nature and photography with your family? It helps us to understand and appreciate each other more and fosters communication, even with the silent types. I know, because I'm married to one. That is a beautiful specimen of sedum, by the way.

You think, the mouth and eyes of the mosquito funny?

I do not find grace in living with such a monster.

Now seriously ... I also believe that a mosquito. Maybe not suck our blood, but must be another type of mosquito.

  13. Giant mosquito-looking things where I come from were called "mosquito eaters." I don't know if they really age mosquitos, but they didn't eat us, or plants, so they had to be good, like spiders in some way. We left them alone or helped them into the outdoors if they were inside.

  14. Crane Fly, and they do look like mosquito. We used to call them large mosquito, that did not bite. Then found out why they don't. Still got Painted Lady butterflies around I see. Great series of photos.
