This is the first posting for the new meme My World. It is hosted by Klaus, Tom, Ivar, Wren, Sandy, Mac and myself. I would like you to check out what we have to offer in the opportunity to show our world to you and we would like to see your world.I would like to give a little bit of information about the world I live. I live in Kent, Ohio, USA which is in the North East corner of Ohio. My corner of Ohio is bordered by Lake Erie to the North, Pennsylvania to the East. Ohio is bordered by West Virginia and Kentucky to the South and Indiana to the West. We are in the mid-west of the USA.
The county I live in is Portage County and Kent is part of Franklin Township. Kent is in the furthest Western portion of the county and central to the county line. An important thing about Kent is it is a college town and the home of Kent State University. Kent has 29,000 people and the university has 24,000 students. There may be some overlap in the count so I consider that Kent's size, city/college, to be about 40,000 people. Kent is the largest city in the county.
The largest building in city proper of Kent is the grain mill. You can see the silos at the front.
The railroad tracks are behind the mill and can be loaded there. You can see the tube feeding the railroad car.
The largest building on campus is the Kent State University Library.
It is an impressive building and is in the Student Center complex area.
I did want to show you that we have small structures also. This is on a main State Route through Kent and seems to be a one room house. My oldest daughter always joked that someday she was going to live in that house. She never did fulfill her wish.

ReplyDeleteF.G. What a great post. It's nice to see the 'real' America, and especially the 'real' mid-west. Over here, us 40+ age group were brought up on the diet of the colt .45, and tumbleweeds!!

how wonderful to see these shots I am a transplant from Canton Ohio. My older sisters went to Kent State and were there during the time of the riots. I still pause for a moment in the first of May to think of that time. I will so look forward to your posts I have been gone form there since 1977 but I do get back to visit

Hi Tom- Thanks for the memories! No, if I only could place that house. Is it on St. Rt. 59 west of town, on the north side of the road? That is just a guess, but it seems like I have seen this one.

ReplyDeleteI've never been to Kent, Ohio but tragically like almost everyone else the first thing that crosses my mind is the Kent State massacres. I think that occured while I was teaching on Okinawa and when I saw the dead students lying on the campus lawn in the photo on the front page of the STARS AND STRIPES newspaper I'll never forget the thought that crossed my mind: what in heaven's name is going on in my buckeye state? I guess some crazy things went on back in the good old days too. LOL.
I love photos of barns, silos and elevators but we don't have any in little Haymarket, Va. What we have in abundance is lots of brand new construction all around town and on the roadways. If I participate, I will have to wear a hardhat while taking pics.

KSU certainly has its history. I grew up in Northern Ohio, love the area and hope to get back there someday.
