Dragonflies This Year

This is my first year capturing dragonflies and I am happy with some of my results. I'm sharing my favorites from 2008. This was at a pond from a golf course. I captured this one at the same time.
This was from the Kent Bog.
This was from a small pond after fishing.
This was from my back yard.
This was also from the back yard.
This is from the same pond as the red one.
I really enjoyed this new experience with my macro shots.

    I tried to get some of dragon flies over the summer but I couldn't get any good ones.

    I love your blog. Dragonflys are one of my favorite insects. The photos are beautiful.
    I and hubby used to fish often. We even owned a Bass Tracker boat while Florida residents. We haven't fished of late, but all the nice photos remind me of how much fun it is. Thanks for sharing.

    Wonderful! This was my first year for dragonflies, too and now I'm hooked on them...so lovely and delicate! I love that red one and didn't see any of those here.

    Lots of variety. You did very well for your first year. They are just as addictive as the birds and butterflies. My problem is I want to know the names and can't figure it out. Looks like your photos are good enough to be able to....time permitting. :)

    Now this is a perfect post!! As you know, the dragons are my passion. Enjoyed seeing your Skimmers and Meadowhawks(one of my faves), I love the macro as well. Great shots!

    Oh wow... you have some amazing dragonflies, I have not captured too many this year. They seem to be scarce around the lakes or the fish were mighty hungry and gobbled them up before I got a chance... heh.

    I have a couple of shots that are like your's. I like to see these and also damsel flies.

    I don't have a lot to say about last year or this new year. Some thoughts...

    I hope 2009 will be better than 2008, 2007, and 2006. I do think our government will be inspired by our new President Obama -- at least I hope so.

    I would like to see the War in Irag end and I would like to see the killing stop everywhere.

    It is my hope that Japan will stop slaughtering whales and raping virgin forests.

    And I hope the people will lose their clubs and no longer club baby seals to death.

    What a world we have and live in. 2009 could be so much better than it will be.

    Fishing Guy, 2008 is the year that you turned into wildlife photographer extraordinaire! Keep up the good photography in 2009. Hug the 8 grandkids, kiss the 4 kids and love the wife in 2009 and keep on fishing and posting.

    I love photographing the dragons too, we have a ton of them around here in the summer. Love to watch them fly around with the purple martins. I don't believe I have ever seen a red one though.

    Wow! Great dragon pictures, fishing guy!
    Your macro work results are very impressive.
    If you haven't got already, I recommend "Dragonflies through Binoculars - A Field Guide to Dragonflies of North America" by Sidney W. Dunkle to put names to them.

    In the meantime here's my .02 about their IDs from the top to bottom. I am happy to be corrected!

    1. Widow Skimmer Libellulla luctuosa - adult male
    2. Blue Dasher Pachydiplax longipennis - adult male
    3. Twelve-spotted Skimmer Libellula pulchella - adult female
    4. Meadowhawk species Sympetrum sp. (possibly Ruby M. Sympetrum rubicundulum)
    5. Common Whitetail Libellula lydia adult male.
    6. Widow Skimmer Libellula luctuosa -adult female
    7. Eastern Amberwing Perithemis tenera - adult female.
