Camera Critters # 92 - Mallard Ducks

The ducks in my header where closely congregated in Fish Creek. This is looking North and upstream. You can see how many ducks are located near the bridge. You can click on the photo to get a closer view. One of the people that  guesses the correct number of ducks will get a framed photo of my header. Just put your guess in the comments.

You can see the one unusual color phase of the Mallard Female Duck at the top right.

I went to the downstream side of Fish Creek looking South and some of the ducks flew a little ways.

They settled in fairly quickly and allowed for some photos.

They are very comfortable in the cold water and the water just rolls off their back. Their duck down keeps them warm and they can just sit still in the water.

You can see a lot of neat critters at the above Meme.

  8. If I had the time, I'd count the ducks because I do love the photo in your header. That said ... I don't have the time and I marvel at how ducks manage in those cold temperatures even WITH down ;-)

  22. Brings back a lot of memories of a time when I was younger. I used to go to the grain elevator and buy a 50 pound bag of cracked corn, haul it to the park, put the bag on my shoulder and walk to the creek and dump the corn in shallow water. The ducks and geese who were in the water to stay warm, would swim up to the spot and eat the grain. I used to do that every winter when it got very cold.

  27. That is an amazing series of duck photos, Tom and they especially capture the atmosphere of waterfowl in winter, while your flower post of today makes us yearn for the more pleasant weather.

  28. That's where our ducks have gone! We miss them. But our lake is fairly solid. Your flowers delightful. Hubby brought me home a bunch when grocery shopping. They are lovely, too! A breath of spring.
