I was out at Lake Hodgson fishing and saw a dark shape near the shore. I was really lucky to have it jump up onto a rock. It was a Green Heron, this is the small heron that I normally see in the trees and it is very good at camouflage. The coloring may fool you but it is a Green Heron for certain.
I was able to move in fairly close with the trolling motor to get these photos.

Fishing does give us bounty in so many different ways like relaxation, nice scenery and an occasional glimpse such as this heron. Well, good for you! I've never seen one yet & I'm glad you shared this with us.

ReplyDeleteWhat a great encounter. We used to have a lot of them here, but seldom see one anymore. I do seem some of the larger ones, which I believe are the great blue herons.
ReplyDeleteIn reference to the hawk on my post, that worried me too that I couldn't really see the red in the tail,but it is a very large bird. It is hard to tell from the pictures how large it is because there is no good reference point to compare it too, but it is as large as the biggest hawks one sees in this area. The old time Fulton County natives called them "mountain hawks", but unfortunately that is not a correct name, and it probably covered a few different species of the larger hawks. Actually I think they mostly thought of hawks in terms of mountain hawks and chicken hawks and I never heard of the smaller ones such as the kestrel when I was growing up.
I like the first photo sitting on the mountain shaped rocks it's beautiful.

ReplyDeleteOh My husband just found one at the side of the road near a swamp yesterday too. Too bad he was on his way to work though. I saw a green heron, it's small and has a heron beak and hump at the back. They make loud call though.
