If the fish aren't biting sometimes I go on a camera quest. The nice thing about being in a boat is you are not tied down to one spot. I saw a grey/blue object near shore with a fisherman about 20 foot away. My eyes said Great Blue Heron and my mind said weeds. As I got closer I knew it wasn't weeds. I guess I got too close.
He flew away around a tree covered spine to a back bay because I had approached.
I slowly trolled into the back bay as the bird worked the shore.
He continued to work the shore as I moved with it happily snapping away.
I saw it get ready to strike but nothing happened.
It reached an area and since it had no food to eat and turned to shore.
It got out of the water and walked up on the bank
It headed into the Pine covered spine that separates the bay and the main lake. If you look closely you can see the main lake on the other side.
I went around the spine and found him on the main lake walking back to the bay.
He waded in fairly deep and I decided to let him continue his fishing and I headed home with a camera full of photos.
Thank you mister heron for the close-up meeting. I do hope you enjoyed the amazing encounter with the Great Blue Heron. To my friends on Camera Critters:

What a great story F.G. herons are a favorite of mine too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful series of photos! The Great Blue Heron is a beautiful bird.
ReplyDeleteThat is great. And I've never seen one on land before so that's a first. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteNice series FG!
ReplyDeleteI really like the reflection in the third photo.
Great shot, FG! And I like the narraration that you put with it.
ReplyDeleteI like those birds. And I am awe struck when they fly off.
gorgeous reflections! It must be nice to be able to shoot from a boat.
ReplyDeleteLove blue herons! You got some really nice photos, plus you managed to get within a decent range. Whistle Whistle clap clap!! I have not been able to achieve this yet! There are 4 blues where I have been taking pictures and I swear they see me park the car!(maybe I need a boat!) I have taken several pics of these blues but not in good camera range! Great job!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the invite to visit camera critters! Great idea! :)
I think you found some very beautiful moments, I like those kind too. A Great Blue Heron is always a favourite to find. Very nice sharing. Love your music choices too!

ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic shot of photos. Glad you were able to get up close. Very nice!
ReplyDeleteI just love herons, but sadly none around here for a while. Beaatiful shots.
ReplyDeleteNice shots of the GBH!
ReplyDeleteAs you know I too like the mobility that a boat gives and you don’t even have to get your feet wet.
The biggest drawback is that it is impossible to totally stabilize the camera. I had an encounter with a pair of Bald Eagles the other day and what I would have given to have been able to put the cam on a pod on solid ground.
FG: What a great day you had. I love the series and the reflection.
ReplyDeleteFabulous photos FG..wonderful reflections and colour!! Great job! :D
ReplyDeleteWOW! Those are stunning images! I like the 3rd shot the most:)

Beautiful pictures! I love the reflections.
ReplyDeleteNice series! I don't think I've ever seen one walking around anywhere but at the edge of the water. I'd love to be out in a boat snapping their photos!
ReplyDeleteGreat photos captured of the heron - especially neat to see him walking on land! (I'm so used to only seeing them in the shallow water.)

ReplyDeleteSo fascinating as if the heron is leading you somewhere :D
ReplyDeleteSpectacular any fish ?
ReplyDeleteHi Tom. Great pics. I have seen quite a few water birds around here, but I either don't have my camera with me, or the birds aren't close enough to capture, which is usually the case.
ReplyDeleteLisa
