Wednesday Potpourri - Squirrels

I do love the squirrels of my area of the country. The most prevalent in Kent is the Black Squirrel. This one was on my deck checking out the barrel planter, which is empty at this time of year. The sun is bright on the black fur making it look lighter but I loved the pose. The Grey Squirrel is the next prevalent one and on any day I can see either on my walks. This little guy had a Maple seed for a snack.
The Fox Squirrel is not as prevalent but are in the area. This one was eating it's prize while I golfed in PA last year.
This is a common member of the squirrel family that is hard to capture because they are so fast. The smallest of the family, the Chipmunk. It is the only one with stripes. This one was along the Cuyahoga River and its quick motions drew me to the hiding place.
This is my new prize from my trip to CVNP this past weekend. It is a small sized squirrel with a great color. It is a Red Squirrel and the first I've captured on camera. It makes me so happy to share this one with you.
Tom asked to show a mixture of the Black and Grey Squirrel so here is a crossbread from last year. It is neither Black nor Grey Squirrel. You can see him hiking with the new baby if you click to check his post.
I hope you enjoyed my Wednesday post on squirrels of NE Ohio.

  1. Nice Tom, although, why no black gray squirrel?

  2. Hi Tom, Squirrels are certainly photogenic... I can't believe that they can be such PESTS to us birders...

BUT--we have a bigger pest.. And that is another cute little critter... That's our CHIPMUNKS. They drive me crazy. I put out all new bird food this morning--and while we were at the grocery store, the chipmunks got in the plate and ate it all.... Grrrrrrrr.

  4. I enjoyed the photographs and I don't even like squirrels. We have non-albino white squirrels here in Brevard. I'll have to get some photos of them.

  8. Those scurrious squirrels, gotta love 'em. We have only the pine squirrel here (along with several species of ground squirrels). But I fondly recall the diversity of the Allegheny hardwood forest. Thanks for the pics and memories.

  10. Hello Tom. LOVE this post. Squirrels are some of my favorite critters. The Red one is gorgeous!! You captured it so well too. I never miss Mary's Squirrel Sundays to see what hers have been up to. She has a fantastic way of adding the funniest dialogue to the pictures too.

  17. I'm glad someone besides me loves these little critters :-) You have such a variety! I just get the Fox Squirrels....maybe they are aggressive and drive the others away. We have grey squirrels in other areas of the city, but I don't see them at my house. If I get over to Kent some day, will you promise me black squirrels?? I really want to see those. Red squirrels are cute, too.

  18. You got great captures on all these critters. I see Betsy filled you in on the 'joys' of chipmunks for us. It wasn't all that long ago that she was calling the chipmunks 'cute'. My, how her tune has changed!
