Today's Flower # 80 - Datura - Devils Trumpet

My friend Luiz from Brazil does the Today's Flowers Meme, check it out. Come and join with your flower photos. Sunday at 2 GMT is the post time. Thanks Luiz for featuring my plant on today's Flowers. A Happy Valentines wish to all my friends.

This past Spring I found this flower in a compost heap at the local city waste recycle yard were I get my free mulch. I dug it up and transplanted it in a low light area by the deck. I thought if it didn't make it I wasn't losing anything. After a few deep waterings it came back to life.
It had just flowered so it set it seeds. I learned it was called a Datura or Devils Trumpet and the plant if ingested was toxic to humans. I handle it with care. The seed pods looked very dangerous and reminded me of the nut of a Horse Chestnut tree.
The Datura prospered in that deck corner and was a prolific bloomer. You can see the white trumpet shaped flowers.
I was pleased with the blooms and the beauty which was shown on this dew filled morning. I now wonder if it will reproduce next year.

I do hope you enjoyed my newly found flower the Datura.

It is a lovely flower. I saw one of these in Hawaii that had grown into a small tree about 15 feet tall and 6 feet wide. You are right to handle the plant carefully it can be toxic.

That´s a wonderful flower. I had a purple last summer and I hope it will survive in my orangerie.

I love this flower, and it is beautiful. I have seen light pinks, but have not seen whites.

The flower has a character of its own.

Congratulations, too, for being featured at TF!

Last shot is great. Just don't eat 'em. I like your Carolina wren photos, we have a sweet little house wren here.

This is a beautiful flower..one that would NOT do well here in my snow climate..it needs overwintering and with it's size I have no space..so I admire it in local public gardens. It grows so tall!
A wonderful choice Fishing guy.
Happy Valentine's Day!

That last photo with the dew is a real stunner. And I think it's interesting that the leaves look so much like potato plants, but this one is so toxic. Maybe they are both in the "deadly nightshade" family? Great pix.

It is lovely...I will have to look it up and see if it comes in any other color. It looks like one that would attract hummingbirds.

Wow, your datura is so similar to my Moon Flower...the seed pod looks identical but my flower has only 4 points to its beautiful white bloom measuring 4 1/2" across and 8 1/2" long........yours is so lovely. I hope mine does the same with so many blooms...check out my Moon Flower in my late Jan. '10 archives...

I like that one too.
But better watch out that it doesn't take over your whole yard....!
