"Volunteers"

The theme this week by Kathy is "Volunteers". Mac, Kathy, Craver, Lew and I have a little contest to show a new theme header each week. We now post anytime before 4 PM EDT on Wednesdays and voting begins after that.

When I think of Volunteers I think about our military personnel. Every 4TH of July we honor these people with a parade. This is a famous scene with the flag raised on Iwo Jima during World War II on February 23,1945 was what I chose for my header.
Here are some of the vets who may have been drafted or were volunteers.
Today's volunteers in a Humvee.
Color guard leading off the parade on the 4TH on two different years.

You can see the others post on my side bar.

Fishing Guy, when I think of the sacrifice that soldiers made for their country, I like to include the survivors as well as those who paid the ultimate price. Many of those men did not decide in their final moments to die for us, but that decision was made before they got to the battlefield... when they volunteered.

Well these photos do more than bring a catch to my throat, they evoke memories of childhood and beloved cousin Bill M. striding down Main Street in his Army uniform proudly saluting his father, my Uncle John M who served in WW1...and tears fill my eyes as I fear are losing this wonderful tradition of parades that honor our military...thank you

Great group of volunteers you have there! I still think the volunteer army with a draft is a better way to fight our wars (and maybe stay out of some).

This is a good take on the theme, and a wonderful tribute to our veterans.

Wonderful post. As a volunteer, I know it is important to find something to do.
