Header Competition # 41 - "Memories of Childhood"

The header theme this week by Gail's Man and is ""Memories of Childhood".  MacDarlaGail's Man,  Lanny and I have a little contest to show a new theme header each week.

Martha and Tom are on a break. Come back as soon as you are able my friends.

The reason I have a Ohio Buckeye Tree in my yard is that there was a Horse Chestnut Tree in Raymond's yard. He was one of my best friends and I thought I would like to have a similar tree in my yard. I wish I had a Black Cherry Tree around back. There was some delicious fruit on that tree. So, what could you find to use a nut from the tree. Well one thing is to play catch. Another thing was to put a hole in it and tie three of them to strings. You could tackle someone with that Australian weapon. We used to load the electric lines full of them.
One of my favorite places to get hot dogs was Coney Island. It used to have some wicked sauce that would really clean you out. I know it isn't as strong anymore, I tried it yesterday.
The real thing about your childhood is you can't go back. I lived on a dirt road and we had a hill behind us that was weed covered. Now this was a pretty big hill and our hunting dogs lived on top. All the beagles were called Rip, no need to think up a new name. We also had bird dogs which were Spaniels. So in relating the story my header shows the big hill (LOL) and the dirt road that is now paved. Everything shrinks from your childhood. The only thing left is the garage that was behind Dave's house were we worked on his 49 Chevy for the drag strip.  My house burnt down to the ground and Dave's house was torn down. You really can't go back, there is nothing left but a memory.

See the other neat post above.

Sweet memories though. I too lived on a dirt road and so did my big kids for a while. My big kids tell my younger ones about all the fun they had on it, especially when it rained. Nice post Tom.

No kidding "you can't go back"! The house I grew up in, its still there but they didn't appreciate the Gravenstein apple trees or the clump Hemlock firs or a half a dozen of the other living Christmas trees that my father planted to shade the home and give it character. Not to mention they park their cars in the backyard on top of some of the best flower beds in the neighborhood!

Great shot of the hill.

Isn't it amazing how things shrink as we get older? The road I had to walk to catch the school bus when I was a kid is now only a fraction of the length I remember! I just can't imagine what they did with all the fence posts that used to be there.

It's sad, but true. I would love to go back to places that I saw when I was young. And wouldn't it be great to return and stop those mistakes from happening, and making things better.

I always thought my childhood home was SO big --until I left home to go to college, and then came back home later... It was SMALL!!!!! ha ha ha

Love hearing your memories, Tom.

Yes, no doubt our childhood days do not have such luxury as we do now, nevertheless the memories are priceless... i miss the good old innocent days i have.. how i wish i could see myself as a young lass now, like in those movies, turning back the clock..

I too grew up at the end of a dead end gravel road next to a big swamp where us kids used to play. We had a long row of grape vines and a huge lilac hedge that I loved to sit under the blooms. Now, I hear, the house is gone and the lot has been leveled. You just can't go back. Thanks for sharing the memories.

Excellent Tom. I wonder if I would like to go back to my childhood days? I dnt think so. Not that it was bad, I just prefer the independence of adulthood.

What nostalgia. Nope, we cannot go back but thank goodness for good memories. Have a wonderful weekend, Tom. Jo

Nice BIG hill in your header photo! I lived in three different homes during my childhood. The first one kept getting flooded (it was too close to the creek), so it was tore down. The second and third ones are still standing. In fact, my brother and his family live in our last childhood home. Oh, and my husband and I live in HIS childhood home. Pretty cool, huh?

My grandpa had a black cherry tree in his front yard but he moved and left it there. I like them and his were big around.
