Camera Critters #22

Camera Critters by Misty Dawn, go here to see who's participating.

The Kent. Ohio area is know for squirrels. There are several varieties of squirrels in the area.

The Fox Squirrel which has a reddish brown coat. They sometimes take their food into a tree to eat. Check the paw hold on the branch.
The Gray Squirrel is a squirrel with a gray coat.
The Black Squirrel which is common in Kent and has a completely black coat and is bigger then the Gray Squirrel cousins.
Then you go out with your camera and see this squirrel.
This squirrel is definitely a cross bred squirrel, somewhere between a Fox and Gray and maybe some Black with a funny tail.
Check out the colors as it tries to escape up the tree.
What a funny looking squirrel. I do hope you enjoyed the squirrel show.

I have heard of albino squirrels, but never a black squirrel.
Here we call them tree rats or suicide squirrels.
Either way, I like to watch them!
Great pictures!

I absolutely LOVE squirrels. Down here we also have red squirrels that look just like black ones - only in a red coat! :)

We no longer have the fox squirrels or the black ones and not the Red Jimmy and all that is left is the Gray squirrel. Sometimes they interbreed and we will have young ones with fox tails or some red hair on the bodies.

You sure did a good job taking these pictures.

Thanks for visiting my blog.

Never heard of a black squirrel. Fantastic captures. The British red squirrel is so small copared to these guys.

A wonderful series on the squirrels. I enjoyed it very much.

Also, thanks for your kind comment about the Osprey photo. I have gotten decent video in Pennsylvania, but never a good still. They seem to be less skittish in Yellowstone.

Great squirrel show!
All of them from your neighborhood, how lucky!

As you know, I worked in Kent for eight years before I moved here. I know all about those squirrels and have seen some interesting 'crosses' too. Once saw a gray squirrel with a black tail... rather interesting!

After being on speakerphone with several of my favorite family members last night (laughing and joking around) and now seeing this post - I'm seriously homesick... an Ohio visit is the only remedy!!!

Those are great shots of the squirrel. I do have some squirrel shots in my files. Not sure what they are yet! Yah! the black one is my fave!

We have lots of Gray Squirrels in our area but I've never seen a Black Squirrel. The cross bred squirrel is really unusual looking - great shots!

Oh wow! That looks like a lemur sort of tail.

We used to have loads of red squirrels here until the grey squirrel was introduced. The grey ate all the vegetation I think that the red needs and they are now very rare and endangered in UK as far as I know. I do remember as a child seeing loads of red squirrels (if asked to colour a squirrel as a child I would pick out a brown crayon. My children would pick a grey crayon.)

I've never seen a black squirrel. Or the hybrid! Great critters.

Hello,
this is wonderful set of squirrels:-)
In my coutry there are many brown or almost red ones. There used to be black squirrels too, but sadly they can be seen very rarely nowadays.
Love that "crossed" squirrel. I have never seen something like that before:-) Thanks for sharing.

I certainly did enjoy it! THe black one is so cool, but the two-toned is something else! There are black squirrels in downtown DC, but out here, we have only gray.

Just popped in to tell you about the hummingbird you commented on....

The juvenile male only has a few feathers that are red and in this view you can only see them as gray spots up on his throat straight down from his eye.

I really enjoyed your Squirrel show! You must have many kinds of squirrels in your country.

Incredible - never seen a cross bred squirrel like that before!

Hi Tom-

Thanks for posting black squirrel shots, reminds me of being home. At Hiram we had mostly black squirrels, but several started showing up that were brown with tan tails. They looked as if there tail had been dipped in bleach. Weird stuff.

Occasionally I run across a black gray squirrel here in C-bus but they are quite rare.

Loved the squirrels! :-) I also got stuck here browsing, as usual. Maybe because I really liked the music. :-I)
the skywatch photos were great too!

The Black Squirrel looks more like the Red which is now so rare in Britain.
Thanks for your comment.

You're the second person I've seen today that had a black squirrel picture! I've never seen one before. All of these are great shots. Even though they're rodents, they're cute! Until they make a nest in your attic and scamper back and forth all night keeping you awake. But I digress. Nice camera critters!

Great photos!
Thank you to show them to us!

I love those black ones... never see them over here, but there's an albino one that's been seen locally.

Totally cool! Love the black squirrel. I've heard tell from folks who've seen them around but I've never been lucky enough to.

Love that Black Squirrel.

Markus Latva-aho said...

We only have those fox-colored ones, but I think they are even more reddish. Would be great varitation to have the black ones.

At the cemetaries people are usually feeding them, so those are quite tame.

I like that gray tailed squirrel. I do so miss squirrels. Only time I have seen one in Redmond, was when I lived just west of town in the Juniper lands. A Gray Squirrel appeared at my bird feeder one day and remained for several months. Guess he got tired of the same old feed and moved on. But 15 miles south of here, they have quite a few in Bend, Oregon.
