"What is that?"

The theme this week by me  is "What is that?". Mac, Kathy, Craver, Lew, Christine and I have a little contest to show a new theme header each week. We now post anytime before 4 PM EDT on Wednesdays and voting begins after that.

I was golfing with my son and grandsons when I heard a sound in a pine tree. What is that?  I've heard that sound before so I looked into the pine. I could see this wing.
What is that? I got a look at it face on. What big eyes you have.
Why it that, why it's a cicada.
They area homely critter.
I did enjoy meeting this insect.
See what the others have to show on my side bar.

While traveling to TX a couple weeks ago, we stopped at a travel center in southern Iowa and was it ever loud...with the clicking and buzzing of the cicadas. It was a deafening sound. At first we thought it was one of those bug zappers or an engine squealing...the cicada hatch is something else, isn't it. I agree they are an ugly bunch, with those big eyes, some even red.

Great macro shots! They are unusual creatures (and noisy)!

Hi Tom, those are amazing pictures of the cicada! We call them Christmas Beetles in South Africa, as they hum and sing loudly around mid-summer. Of course, I've never heard of seen one here in East Africa over the past four summers I've been here. Great post, thanks for sharing.

Wow, some great shots. Cicadas are pretty ugly, but they sure are fascinating close up!
