He's Back

Since the aftermath of Hurricane Ike I didn't see the Praying Mantis. I hoped he hadn't been injured or captured by a snake but he just wasn't around. Today while walking the dog I discovered him back near the Sage plant. Once you find him it's fairly easy to get some shots.
I'm even able to get some macro work done and only disturb him somewhat.
He didn't like me too close so he headed for cover. It wasn't long until he blended into the surroundings.
I also saw a white spot on the green plant and it turned out to be a caterpillar of the Hickory Tussock Moth.
They a a neat white with black decorations.
Luckily I didn't handle him for I found out later it has a toxic poison in those outer hairs.
One final critter on my Sedum from a few weeks back a moth was working along with the bees.
It was fairly co-operative for these shots.
The camera was doing really well for the macro work.

Great pictures!
I knew some caterpillars sting, but I didn't know there were poisonous ones. Learn something new today.

These are great! I haven't even been out in my yard. Too hot. It's kind of amazing that those small little things can weather a storm. I wonder where they hide.

Wow, what nice shots! Especially those fuzzy things. I wouldn't want to get too close to them.

I found your blog through anothers. What great shots you took! Love the Praying mantis picture, however, I am glad he is in your yard and not mine!

I think looking at Old Man Lincoln's many great posts has inspired you to a higher level of photography. I can see it as this year has progressed. You have photos that look like they belong in National Geographic magazine. Great work, Fishing Guy. The love for the critters shows in each and every photo.

We have a similar caterpillar here-and it does sting the fire out of you. This summer me and the girls were all stung before we realized the little boogers were hiding under the leaves of our blueberry bushes.

Neat pictures as always-glad the praying mantis is still around.

Judging from the bites out of the sedum and hosta(?) leaves, your mantis showed up right on time. Great pics!

I love that caterpillar! I keep looking for some, but not much luck so far. That one is really fat and fuzzy! Think that is a winter indicator?
