Darla from Florida was the first one to guess. She has some great flowers on her site. My friend Craig from Florida was way off with the caterpillar but it was the funniest. He has one going if you want to take a guess at the animal from my area. LOL
It is the hull from the growing nut of the Ohio Buckeye Tree. This is a photo of all the nuts growing from one flower stem. There will be a big harvest of Ohio Buckeyes this year. Here is my original photo before the crop. They are not sharp spikes and are gone by now when they turn brown.

WOW Tom. That is a magnificient tree. You have to tell me more about it. Is it a nut which you eat? I have never seen or heard of it before. What does it taste like? All the nuts I know of have hard shells. I would love to see what the inside of one looks like if you ever get the chance to post a picture of it.
Congrats Darla. You really are the best at this game. :)
Darla, Darla, Darla!!!
LOL
I was born and raised in Ga. The peach state. I now live in Fl, the sunshine state. You know stuff people have a clue about...
I am with Joan on this one... Tom what the heck is a buckeye? I request a followup post on buckeye's, thier history, what they are and why y'all want to be one.
Sorry to put you on the spot but inquiring minds want to know... LOL
Craig
Joan: The Ohio Buckeye Tree is one I planted in my front yard when we moved in 36 years ago. It is part of the Horse Chestnut family and is not edible for humans. The area squirrels love the nut and it is part of their winter feed. If you click on the 'Buckeye' link you can see all the post I have made on the tree through my posts.
Thanks Tom. I remember that post but it was just a bare tree and did not have such beutiful fruit on it. Thank you so much for the additional info. I am always very curious about things like this.
Craig is agreeing me me on something?? My godness!! It is going to snow!!. LOL!!
At least I got the Buckeye right!!!!
Craig Glenn: I'm in Florida too.
Now I will know what they look like, if I ever see one in the hull. I've always seen them as the brown nut.
I missed out on this one Tom---but wouldn't have known. BUT--we did have Buckeye trees in my hometown--and I remember collecting buckeyes when I was a child.
Betsy
Great photos, I am going to have to do a google to see what they use buckeyes for. Don't have a clue at this point.
I still think it doesn't look like a buck's eye.
Congrats to Darla.
Missed it Tom.lol.
Would'nt have got it right tho.
Congrats to Darla and all the others who guessed right. I was sooo close : )
