Camera Critters # 3

Misty Dawn is doing a Sunday Camera Critters where you post photos of animals. Check it out.

What do you do when your driving back to work after lunch and see a dead animal in the road? You make sure you don't hit it when you drive by.

What happens when the animal walks by your car? You get out and take a picture for camera critters. He was walking the double yellow line but still in danger. It probably weighed at least 20 pounds.
You then get a large branch and force The large snapping turtle off the road. The turtle had his own ideas but when he snapped onto the stick I was able to drag him to the side of the road.
He was mad at me for disturbing him but he was now safe to go to the pond he was heading for.

FISHING GUY (wink) great post! I have only been around snapping turtles once, went to arkansa to visit my sister who lived there, and she thought I was insane for doing the very same thing. Took a smaller turtle down off the bank and all she could do was yell CHIGGERS!! STACE< CHIGGERS!! I was in a dress, and thank goodness the Creator protects the innocent(dumb) I still have NO clue what chiggers are.. Have a beutiful day.. My youngest still wants a baby snapping turtle for a pet.. go figure.

Great pictures. We have some large snapping turtles in our pond. I would hate for one to get a hold of a toe while swimming though.lol..
Enjoy all your photos.

Oh my gosh he is big, and what a great deed you did to get him off the road, i wonder what would happen if you picked him up by the shell, I don't know much about these turtles, can they reach out? Or do they pop there heads in under there shell?

That's a big ol' snapper! Was he walking down the road in Kent? "What happens when the animal walks by your car? You get out and take a picture for camera critters." - Hehehehehe I LOVE that!!!

Good "snap" of the snapper!

Their mating season is in full swing now so they are popping up in some unusual places.

I bet after you seen how it chomped down on the stick that you were glad it was a stick and not your fingers!

Lily: The snapping turtle has a long neck. The only way you can pick them up is by the tail and I'm not that brave.

They will try to swing around and bite your leg.

Wow! I think I would have been too freaked out to help him though. Glad you came across him and not me!

Snappers are SLOW moving critters, and very nasty...we have many here in our farm pond and our creek...

Good eating so I have read...Supposed to have 7 different meats within them...

Never cooked one...But I have seen them take out some of our ducks and goslings...

Great picture...

Short story, years ago one of our dogs had one at bay, the turtle was HUGE...we somehow captured it, put a farm Wash tob over it, then on the top a Slate transformer...we had to leave fro 30 MINUTES, we felt this would hinder the critter until we coudl release it in a different location

WE returned the Slate transformer that took 3 men to move, was off the wash tub adn the turtle was No longer there...
they are Quite strong

I like your camera critter. It amazes me how they can actually get from point A to point B. I guess slow and steady.
