The Haunted House on the Hill in Kent

The 14-room Victorian home often referred to as the “The Haunted House on the Hill,” as it was rumored to be a model for the Hitchcock movie Psycho. The house was built in 1867 by prominent businessman Freeman Underwood and is now owned by the Vanags family. I know the Vanags family so was able to go into the yard to get the close views. It is a beautiful house and painted with much detail. Click on the picture to see more detail.

Here is the view that gave it the name "The Haunted House on the Hill" Looking at the back of the house from the street below.
This is "The Haunted House on the Hill" above the Bates Motel from the movie "Psycho". There are some similarities but it wasn't really the one used as an example. It made for a good story. Mr. Vanags said his house is really too big for the family since his daughter has gone to college and he was looking to sale the house.

What a cool house but I'll be afraid to stay in this 'haunted house' by myself

I just love these old houses. you don't see the love, skill and craftmanship that goes into them much anymore. I believe these old home have a story to tell of their own, the original owners hopes and dreams and I always wonder what happened to these people. Did they live the long and happy lives that they hoped for when they built these places.. Thanks for sharing!

What a beauty.. I like this style of house very much... as for Bates house.. I have to admit I do not like films that scare me... I'm one of those that jumps out of my seat... ha! Jane loves wacthing films that scare, but only if I watch them with her. It is not that she feels safer.. oh! no. Itis because she can have a good laugh when I jump or scream...
What a big softy..

I was the paperboy who delivered the Akron Beacon Journal to this "haunted house" back in the mid-1950's! It really was a creepy place, especially when spring/summer thunderstorms occurred.

I lived in the house in 1963 ,64 and 65 along eith my college roommate dave. we have some wonderfull memories. We never actually saw the ghosts but we would sometimes hear them at night-especially when the wind was blowing and thw night was dark and stormy. The front door was -guarded by Tim Huntly's warewolf (disguised as a Gordon setter). It would bark wildly at any one who came to call(actually it was "pet me pet me or I won't let you pass" Dave(who is visiting me from CA and I were looking at my 1965 photo of the house and reminissing about ouT GREAT college days and the house when we decided to google the house. THANKS FOR SAVING IT! If you want a 1965 photo Email me :George.penfield@comcast.net

OMG! I lived here when I attended KSU! It was broken up into apartments. The double French doors went into the music parlor where I kept my drum set. The owner had an 1887 Steinway grand piano in that room. Upstairs lived my friends Deacon and Sukie. It was a White House in those days. What a great blast from the past!
